Thirty years ago, a 21 year old playing for his hometown team was honoured as a CCAA All Canadian. Three years later, he was honoured as a CIAU All Canadian. Garth Premak is the only athlete in the nation to receive the honour in both college and university hockey.

After spending four seasons in the Western Hockey League with the New Westminster Bruins and the Kamloops Blazers, the defenseman returned to Alberta for the 1988-89 season to don the jersey of the Red Deer College Kings who won an ACAC championship and placed second at the CCAA National Hockey Championships. In addition to being named a CCAA All Canadian in 1988-89, Premak was also honoured as an ACAC First Team All Conference Selection and a CCAA Tournament All Star.

The Red Deer native then headed north to toil three seasons with the University of Alberta Golden Bears. While wearing green and gold, Premak played on two conference champions and a national champion. In addition to being a CIAU All Canadian in 1991-92, he was honoured as the CIAU Tournament MVP as the Bears raised the University Cup for the eighth time.

Following a season with Canada'a National Team, Premak entered the professional ranks in 1992-93 playing with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League and the South Carolina Stringrays of the East Coast Hockey League before heading across the pond to join the Nottingham Panthers of the British Hockey League. He would play with the Panthers through the 1997-98 season.

Premak currently resides in the Palmetto State where he is a branch manager at a building supply company. In 2017, he coached his two sons in the South Carolina High School Hockey State Championships.
