Established in the early 1970's, the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Association (MCAA) sanctioned hockey from 1970 through 1986. In the early years, teams competed in other leagues such as the Manitoba Intermediate 'B' Hockey League and the Manitoba Southwest Hockey League. Champions were determined by a playoff. From 1983 through 1986, the top two Manitoba teams in the Midwest International College Hockey League (MICHL) entered a playoff to determine the champion and the CCAA representative.
